Responsibilities

The Patient Companion will provide continuous observation of patients, at bedside or virtually, to minimize the patient's ability to injure themselves or others while in the hospital. Patient needs may include, but are not limited to, maintenance of medical interventions, managing behavioral issues, mental health issues, substance abuse issues, wandering and confusion.

Essential Functions:

• The Patient Companion maintains safety of patient room by using visual sweeps and routine stripping of room and removal of any and all items that could be used to injure a patient or staff.
• Responsible for diligently tending to and being attentive to patient at all times to promote a safe environment.
• Within established guidelines, will provide comfort measures for the patient, such as offering fluids, etc.
• Provides diversional activities for patients, as appropriate, to include conversing, playing music, watching movies, providing patient with an "activity box," etc.
• Utilizes a calm, understanding and courteous attitude when communicating and working with patients.
• Requests assistance in an emergency situation or when there is a change to the patient's behavior or condition.
• As requested by the Nursing Staff, responsible for maintaining a clean environment for the patient by assisting the staff with patient's activities of daily living. Will also assist staff with turning, positioning and ambulation of patient.
• Assists with feeding the patient if directed to do so by the Registered Nurse.
• Maintains patient's comfort at all times and communicates patient's needs for patient care to Nursing staff.
• Responds to questions/concerns of patient and patient's family members, utilizing excellent customer service skills.
• Collaborates with other members of the Patient Care Team to ensure excellent and proper services are provided at all times.
• The Patient Companion maintains competency with the virtual patient monitoring system.

Schedule: Five shifts per week, 3:00pm–11:30pm, every third weekend and every third holiday.
